Drafokhar / Drifika Peak (6647m)

Overviews

The Drafokhar / Drifika Peak (6647m) is located in the Charakusa Glacier, a remote and rugged area of the Karakoram Range in Pakistan. Known for its challenging terrain, Drifika is considered one of the hardest climbs among peaks below 6,500 meters in the Karakoram. The peak was first successfully summited by a Japanese expedition in 1978, led by Akiya Ishimura. Climbing Drifika requires exceptional physical fitness and a broad range of mountaineering skills. In addition to proficiency in climbing and ropework, climbers must possess extensive experience with high-altitude conditions, as well as the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing weather and snow conditions often encountered in this region. The climb is a technical challenge, with steep rock and ice sections that demand both skill and endurance. The ideal season for climbing Drifika is from June to September, when the weather conditions are more favorable, though this period can still present harsh elements. Climbers should be prepared for significant physical and mental challenges. Camping at Hushe Valley, which serves as a base for the climb, incurs a nominal camping fee. Hushe Valley is the starting point for many expeditions in the region, providing access to several peaks, including Drifika.
